MADRID

Jean Paul Martinez, artist painter, pratically exclusively self-taught in the artistic field is also a lover of photography. He starts his artistic activity taking part in some collective showings. In 1976 he moves to Spain. Until the end of he 80´s he continues to do collective exhibitions.
During his stays in New York, he takes an interest in abstract expressionism. He defines his technique as mixed, on canvas, medium and big formats.

His beginnings were in drawing, dedicating mainly to impressionism. Later on he takes an interest in novelty techniques and begins to change his way of expressing his art creating more fluid drawing. Further on he deepens his already authentically personal work with thick materials, short and separated strokes. This is where he began his abstract phase, proceeding into an informalism of materic tendency whic is very characteristic of his work. His work started to acquire a thicker density, with gross fillers, incorporating various materials with a distressed aspect, scratched, with holes, as if worn down by time, using also recycled or discarded objects, mixed with the traditional materials and thus searching a new language for artistic expression. Another typical tool is his use of every-day objects.
Although the evolution of his work is quite uniform from his beginnings in informalism, with time some subtle changes and differences took place both in techniques and contents: He has his conceptualist era, working with stained materials…his work may be defined as purely rupturist expressionism. Within the informalism, materic paint which is characterized by the mixing technique and the use of heterogenous materials, his most characteristic works are those where he applies the mix of various materials in compositions that resemble walls, always trying to relate his art with distressed shapes and colors of these surfaces. The iconographic character he adds to his works by means of different signs, sometimes letters, numbers, has a great allegoric meaning connected to the interior world of the artist, evoking subjects as significant as the most common life feelings.
Each painting may have a specific meaning, another distinctive feature based in the reflection of the chromatic austerity, with serious colors, mainly earthy colds such as ochre, brown, beige or black.

He is always searching for more internal tones, still using on occasions happy colors : red, yellow, white, but contrasted with deeper colors such as black and grey. Existentialism is present in his work, also claiming freedom, the importance of the individual, his capacity of action in the face of life, and thus he pretends with his art to make us reflect on our own existence.
